GMCH turns to soldiers, NGOs in the event of blood shortage
Guwahati: NGOs and personnel of the armed forces form majority of bloods donors in northeast’s biggest hospital — Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Speaking to TOI, Dipankar Baruah, head of the blood bank at GMCH, said, last year, over 40,000 people donated blood at GMCH, where armed forces, NGOs like Marwari Yuva Manch and Terapanth topping the list. “On an average, GMCH requires approximately 200-250 units of blood and blood components per day. In order to fulfil this requirement, NGOs and armed forces personnel contributed immensely. Whenever there is shortage, we call them,” he said.
