An Indiana woman was sentenced to a year in prison Tuesday for transporting her two infants in a plastic milk crate that was strapped to her bike with a bungee cord.
Blossum Kirby, 36, of Indianapolis was convicted on charges of child neglect during a jury trial last month in Marion County, according to Fort Wayne CBS affiliate WANE-TV.
Kirby will serve her jail sentence and her probationary one-year sentence concurrently.
She was arrested last July for her wanton way of carrying the babies when multiple witnesses called police after seeing Kirby nearly fall off her bike.
One witness told police he thought Kirby had toys in the crate — then the witness saw an arm move inside the box.
The twin babies were 2 months old at the time and wearing only diapers.
Other witnesses told police they saw Kirby almost crash her bike into a curb.
Kirby told responding officers that she always transported her kids that way since she didn’t have a car.
Medical officials said the baby girl had “sunburns, abrasions and minor scratches to her body,” per WANE. The baby boy had a wound to the groin and an extreme rash, as well as sunburns and minor scratches.
