Scotland head into the latest set of qualifiers as the surprise leaders of Group A, in large part due to their shock 2-0 win over three-time European champions Spain back in March.

The famous win over Spain followed a 3-0 victory over Cyprus which leaves the Scots with maximum points after their first two games, three points clear of Spain and second and four points ahead of Saturday's opponents.

Steve Clarke's side currently find themselves in a fantastic position to qualify for next summer's Euro 2024 in Germany, which would mean qualifying for back to back Euros having not previously qualified for a major tournament since last century.

Spain are still expected come good and one of the two automatic qualification will likely go to them, meaning the other spot is realistically a two-way tussle between Scotland and Norway.

The Scots already hold a five point advantage over the Norwegians after just two games, and should they avoid defeat in Oslo on Saturday, it feels a lot like it would be Scotland's place in the Euros to lose.

Clarke's side do have the benefit of being guaranteed a spot in the qualification play-offs should they not finish in the top two, due to them having won their Nations League group last year.

Norway were forced to play their opening two qualifiers for Euro 2024 with their record breaking goal scorer Erling Haaland who withdrew from the camp through injury.

The striker who scored 52 goals for Manchester City this season is the squad for their next two qualifiers, starting with Saturday's visit of Scotland, as he looks to help turn his nation's fortunes around.

Norway picked up just one point from their first two qualifiers, going toe to toe with Spain in Malaga for all of 84 minutes before a flurry of late goals have the hosts a 3-0 win.

The main disappointment for Stale Solbakken's side though was their failure to win away in Georgia, as the Lions were held to a 1-1 draw, leaving them with a lot to do to qualify for their first major tournament since Euro 2000.

The Lions have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions, but have only lost once at home since 2020, so will take confidence heading into this weekend of closing the gap on their main qualification rivals.

Saturday's crunch six-pointer will be the 18th team the two nations have gone head to head, of which Scotland have come out on top eight times compared to Norway's three.

The last time the two nations met was in a friendly back in 2013 in which Scott Brown scored the only goal of the game in Molde.
