Ceiling fan crashes down on PhD student at MSU
Vadodara: A PhD student received minor injuries after a ceiling fan fell on him in the main building of MS University’s Faculty of Arts on Tuesday morning.
Girish Bambhaniya was on supervision duty for the second year BCom exam in room 18 of the arts faculty building when the incident occurred.
The supervisor was provided primary treatment at the university’s health centre before being referred to the state-run SSG Hospital.
The incident brought to the fore the lack of maintenance and upkeep of the university’s infrastructure.
Reacting to the incident, senate member Kapil Joshi said that this is the third such incident in the arts faculty. Earlier, too, a ceiling fan had fallen in the economics department while in another incident a student had to take 14 stitches after an iron grill fell on a girl student.
“Fortunately, the ceiling fan did not fell on a group of students, otherwise it would have turned into a bigger mishap,” said Joshi.
“After Covid-19 pandemic, the arts faculty has undergone major repair and renovation work for which the university spent a huge amount. Such a mishap even after spending crores of rupees on renovation does not make sense,” he said, adding that all the ceiling fans of the faculty should be checked immediately to avoid such mishaps.

“It is the moral duty of the university to provide proper infrastructure to the students and staff members without risking their lives. Students are also paying exam fees and the university is duty-bound to provide proper amenities to them,” said Joshi.
