TIRUPATI: A man stole an 'unlocked' police patrol vehicle parked near the Chittoor I town police station and went for a long drive into the neighbouring state -
Tamil Nadu.
The Chittoor I town police, who were shocked to realise their patrol vehicle was stolen, launched a frantic operation to locate and bring back the vehicle on Monday, hours after it went missing.
Chittoor SP Y Rishanth Reddy, who took serious note of this embarassing episode, reported at the I town police station in the district headquarters and immediately placed the driver of the vehicle under suspension.
DSP Srinivasa Murthy, who too up the investigating of the "police rakshak" vehicle theft case, got in touch with the Tamil Nadu police, after CCTV footage showed the stolen police patrol vehicle being driven towards Vellore and further in the neighbouring state.
After hours long coordination with the Tamil Nadu police, the vehicle was finally spotted and intercepted near Tindivanam-Vandavasi route, more than 100km away from Chittoor.
Chittoor I town police, who reached the location in Tamil Nadu, retrieved their vehicle and took the accused into custody and shifted him to Chittoor.
While the investigation is still going on, Chittoor police are yet to divulge information related to the identity and other credentials of the thief who stole the police patrol vehicle.
