Ahmedabad: After a few students of
Gujarat Vidyapith took a stand against the recent fee hike imposed by the university’s board of management, the deemed university reduced the new fees by about 50%. A students’ group on Monday had submitted a memorandum opposing to the management’s decision to raise the annual educational fees by a staggering 250%-300%.
The group of students has urged the vice-chancellor to reconsider the fee hike, as it poses an immense burden on financially disadvantaged students who may find it impossible to pay such exorbitant fees.
The students argued that such fee hikes contradict the principles of the institution, which was founded by
Mahatma Gandhi. In response, the deemed university reduced the new fees by 50% on Monday.
The board of management of Gujarat Vidyapith on May 10 had fixed the annual fees for undergraduate courses at Rs 3,000 which has now been reduced to Rs 1,500. Total UG fees including internal exam fees, student support fees, extra-curricular fees will be Rs 3,600 per annum.
The deemed university has now fixed fees for postgraduate and PG diploma courses at Rs 6,600, and postgraduate audio-visual diploma courses at Rs 10,500. The fee for PhD programmes has been fixed at Rs 8,900. The new students’ registration fees will be Rs 1,000 and Rs 100 for external exam registration.
The hostel fees will be Rs 2,000 while food deposit will be Rs 15,000 and kitchen maintenance fees will be Rs 1,000. tnn
