While investigating the bribery charge against IAS officer Anil Ganpatrao Ramod, the Central Bureau of Investigation has found Rs 47 lakh in 17 bank accounts owned by him and his family members, the agency told a special court in Pune on Tuesday. The court remanded Ramod to judicial custody till June 27.
CBI had arrested Ramod, the Additional Divisional Commissioner of Pune Division, on June 9, in his office while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8 lakh to award higher compensation to farmers whose lands are being acquired for highway projects. Ramod was also land acquisition arbitrator for Pune, Satara and Solapur districts under the National Highways Act.
The complaint in this case was filed on May 10, 2023, by a lawyer, who represents several farmers from Satara and Solapur districts for their land acquisition related cases and grievances. The farmers had been seeking higher compensation for their lands that are in the process of being acquired for a highway project.
According to the CBI, Ramod allegedly kept the complainant’s cases pending and when the complainant approached him in this regard recently, he demanded a bribe amount of 10 percent of the hike in compensation sought by the farmers. Ramod allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh from the complainant for the increased compensation of around Rs 1.25 crore and finally negotiated the bribe amount at Rs 8 lakh.
CBI had earlier told the court that Ramod is a “habitual offender” and during searches, Rs 1.26 lakh in cash was recovered from Ramod’s office cabin. Also, CBI recovered cash amounting to Rs 6.64 crores and important documents during searches at his residence in Baner. The CBI stated that “incriminating documents” were seized during a search at the office of “M/S Vedalaxmi Developers Designers Private Ltd” in Baner, which is registered in the name of Ramod’s wife.
Special judge AS Waghmare had then remanded Ramod to CBI custody till June 13 for further investigation. Accordingly, when the custody expired, CBI’s additional superintendent of police Ismail Pendhari produced Ramod before the court and sought his judicial custody for 14 days.
CBI submitted through its lawyer Abhay Arikar that along with cash seizures made earlier, a probe is underway into the Rs 47 lakh found into 17 bank accounts in the names of Ramod and his family members. After the court granted him judicial custody, Ramod was shifted to Yerwada jail. Defence lawyer Sudhir Shah said he would be filing an application seeking Ramod’s bail in court on Wednesday.
