Kanpur: Three persons were killed when a car rammed into a group of people sitting by the roadside in Bilhaur Kotwali police area of the district on Monday evening.
According to police, the incident took place in Makhanpurwa village on the Lucknow-Etawah road where a group of villagers were sitting by the side of the road and guarding their orchards. The car hit the group at around 4 pm.
The deceased, identified as Ahibaran Singh (63) and Surendra Singh (62), were residents of Makhanpurwa village while Ghaseetey (65) belonged to nearby Tikapurwa village.
The car, after hitting the group, fell into a ditch. As soon as the incident happened, the people around immediately rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation before alerting the police.
The car driver, who was trying to flee the spot, was nabbed by the locals, who later thrashed him severely.
The Dial 112 police team reached the spot and took the driver into its custody.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the area.
Scores of people created ruckus on the Lucknow-Etawah road demanding strict action besides necessary compensation to the family members of the deceased.
Inspector Kotwali Surendra Singh, who reached the spot and tried to pacify the kin of those killed and the villagers, but in vain. Later, senior officials arrived at the spot and intervened in the matter and assured the protesters of necessary action into the case after which they allowed the police to lift the bodies. The police later sent the bodies for postmortem examination.
The driver will be booked under various sections of the IPC after an FIR is lodged against him, the inspector said.
