Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues flood alert in THESE Gujarat districts, extensive damage expected

Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar districts in Gujarat may get over 20 cm of rainfall on June 15 which could lead to low-lying flooding

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to cause extensive damage in Gujarat. The districts that are likely to be most impacted include Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka and Jamnagar. 

Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar districts in Gujarat may get over 20 cm of rainfall on June 15 which could lead to low-lying flooding, IMD said. 

An Orange alert has been issued for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in the state. 

Meanwhile, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy has weakened and it is set to cross the Jakhau Port in Gujarat by the evening of June 15 as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS).

"Cyclone Warning for Saurashtra and Kutch Coasts: Orange Message. VSCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today about 300km WSW of Porbandar, 290km SW of Devbhumi Dwarka, 340km SSW of Jakhau Port, 350km SSW of Naliya. To cross near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by the evening of 15th June as VSCS," the IMD tweeted.

Amit Shah to chair a meeting today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Tuesday chair a review meeting on the preparedness for cyclone 'Biparjoy'.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and MPs from the districts in Gujarat which could be impacted by the cyclone will also participate in the meeting virtually.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel regarding the impending Cyclone Biparjoy and assured all possible help to the state.

He directed senior officers to take every possible measure to ensure that people living in vulnerable locations are safely evacuated by the state government and to ensure the maintenance of all essential services such as power, telecommunications, health, and drinking water. He said steps should be taken to restore these services immediately in the event of damages caused to them.

He also gave directions for ensuring the safety of animals and that control rooms should function round the clock.
