Ludhiana: Ahead of ongoing development work, the main entry of the Ludhiana railway station will now be from the Railway Mail Service (RMS) compound till the upgradation project gets completed. Besides, the exit of the station will also be shifted in about a fortnight.
Speaking to TOI on the condition of anonymity, an official privy to the upgradation project of Ludhiana railway station said, “The main entry to the station has been closed on Sunday late afternoon, and from now onwards the passengers and vehicles will enter the railway station through new entry from RMS compound side. This change will remain into effect till the time the upgradation work of railway station gets over, which will take 2-2.5 years.
“In about 10-12 days, we are also going to close the exit of the station and shift it towards the old entry which we closed yesterday. The major works will now take place at the station, including construction of multi-storey building, connectivity of station with elevated road etc.”
Residents seek fast completion of workWhile city residents are happy over the development, but they want the authorities to clarify about the deadline of the completion of the project.
Sunil Mehra, state general secretary of
Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal said, “We do not have any problem with this because this is happening due to the upgradation of the station... Ludhiana railway station was in dire need of redevelopment for decades now, and we are happy that finally project is starting. Our only concern is that the Centre and the railway authorities should fix a deadline for completion of the work, and get it completed within that time frame only.”
Sandeep Vaid, executive member of Business Bachao Morcha also added: “We have no problem with change of entry and exit of railway station, but authorities must resolve the issue of traffic chaos outside the station which is causing huge problems for the commuters, residents and traders.”
