5.8kg heroin seized in Aizawl, four arrested

AIZAWL: Excise sleuths seized 5.8kg of heroin in the Zemabawk neighbourhood of Aizawl on Sunday. Four persons from Cachar district in Assam were arrested for illegal trafficking and possession of the contraband.
The arrested persons are Mohammad Nazimul Hussain Barbhuya (34) of Nutan, Ramnagar; Abdul Kalam Laskar (23) of Uttar Mohanpur, Sonai; Kutbul Alom Laskar (28) of Dakshin Mohanpur, Sonai and Sukur Ali Mazumder (22) of Lakhipur.
The heroin was reportedly smuggled from Myanmar across Tiau, the Mizoram-Myanmar border river.
The state excise and narcotics department officials also seized 248g of heroin on Saturday from the adjoining Bawngkawn locality in Aizawl. They arrested N. Ngolang (55) of Tahan (Kalemyo), Myanmar, in this connection. A total of 6.58 kg of heroin has been.
The excise and narcotics officer-in-charge of narcotics station in Aizawl, Thangchuanga, said all the accused were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. He said the arrested four non-tribals from Assam and one Myanmar national were produced before a district court in Aizawl on Sunday. The Myanmar national was remanded in 14-day judicial custody for interrogation and further investigations and sent to the Central Jail near Aizawl.
Meanwhile, state police seized 124g of heroin from Zote village in Champhai district near Myanmar border on Saturday. They arrested Barman (28) of West Bengal. Barman was booked under relevant sections of the ND&PS Act, 1985 and produced before a district court in Champhai that remanded him in a 14-day judicial custody and sent him to the Champhai district jail.
