The NIA has arrested four suspected members of the Bangladesh-based radical Islamic group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) - a chapter of the al Qaida in the Indian subcontinent (AQIS) - from Assam's Goalpara and Bongaigaon in the last 24 hours, police said Sunday.
Abdus Subahan, Jalaluddin Sheikh, Abdus Subhan and Hafizur Rahman had been picked up by Assam police last year during a wider crackdown on ABT while working as Imams and madrassa teachers. They had been granted bail only last month. This time, the first three were picked up from Goalpara, and Hafizur from Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district.
Goalpara SP VV Rakesh Reddy said Imams Subhan and Sheikh were caught last August 27, and madrassa teachers Subahan and Rahman four days later. They had been allegedly providing logistics support and shelters to absconding Bangladeshi ABT suspects since 2019 and recruiting youths for sleeper cells.
