Saturday saw the Citizens win the Champions League at the second time of asking with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan.

It meant that after their Premier League and FA Cup success, City have become the second team to win the treble,

Such an achievement is very rare, with Manchester United being the first to do it in 1999.

Champions League glory was all that was left for City to win, and Gallagher has compared it to Messi winning the World Cup with Argentina last year.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, he said: "The Champions League is symbolic. I think we've been the best team in Europe for the last five years, hands down.

"I just think the tiny little margins have gone against us but that's a vindication of the last five years. Domestically, you can't even argue about it.

"But now, yeah the Champions League is symbolic but like Guardiola said, if we had lost that final we'd still be the same club, the same team.

"The cup competitions are very, very difficult, that one in particular. But to beat Bayern Munich and Real Madrid with the final really, it's like Messi winning the World Cup.

"It's the only thing anybody would hold against him, 'he could not be the greatest of all time as he's not won the World Cup', now he's done it, he's widely accepted as the GOAT."

Guardiola has now won 12 major honours at City since he joined in 2016, with five of those being Premier League titles.

Three of them have come in as many years, and Gallagher believes the Spaniard will be wanting to make it four on the trot.

"Knowing Pep, he'll want four in a row," he added. "He will want that nobody else has done, and the Champions League final is at Wembley next season.

"So, there's a lot... look, who knows, you've been in dressing rooms when you've won big trophies. Is there a drop off? If there's one guy at you want at the helm of it all, it's Guardiola.

"If we buy a couple of players and let a couple go, refresh the squad, I still think the squad is hungry. Haaland is still hungry, he'll be coming out of that final thinking, 'great but I didn't score', he'll be wanting to do something spectacular in the Champions League final."
