Vadodara: After a gap of almost two years, M S University has decided to restart the process of purchasing new books and journals for Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library, one of the biggest libraries in the state.
After allegations of misappropriation in the purchase process, the university had formed a probe committee. And then the entire process of purchasing new books and journals for students and staff of different faculties had come to a halt. In the process, a grant of Rs 8 crore which government provides to the university for equipping its library had lapsed.
Before two days, the library committee decided to give a go-ahead to the purchase process. Accordingly, all departments and faculties have been asked to submit their recommendations, needs of the books and journals to university officials who will evaluate the requirements and kick off the process soon.
But the committee which was constituted to probe into allegations of misappropriation is yet to submit its report. The university administration is expected to take final nod of the university’s syndicate for clearing the purchase process now.
Officials are also planning to host a book fair in which publications from across the country will be invited. “After students and teachers visit this fair, they will get a better idea on the requirements in their subject areas,” said a university official.
Meanwhile, the university is yet to take any decision regarding maintenance contract of air-conditioned reading room of the library. There were allegations of misappropriation in awarding maintenance contract as well. During a syndicate meeting, a syndicate member had objected to maintenance contract being given on higher rates. But later there was no action on it.
