Cyclone Biparjoy brings moderate rainfall to Mumbai, Air India flights affected

The India Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain with gusty winds in parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to make landfall between Kutch district and Karachi on June 15.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted light to moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph at isolated places in several parts of Maharashtra including Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Palghar.

Mumbai also witnessed high tide waves today morning as cyclone Biparjoy intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. Several parts of Mumbai and Maharashtra received rains on Sunday night.

Following this, Air India on Monday announced the delay and cancellation of flights due to the weather conditions.

“Inclement weather conditions and the temporary closure of Runway 09/27 at the Mumbai airport, in addition to other consequential factors beyond our control have resulted in delays and cancellation of some of our flights. We regret the inconvenience caused to our guests, as we make all effort to minimize the disruptions," the airline said in a tweet.

Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15. The IMD has issued an alert in Thane, Mumbai and Palghar. It has also asked fishermen in the coastal areas to be on alert from 11-14 June. 

Apart from Mumbai, the weather office has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over Northeast India during the next five days.

For Assam, in a 'Special Weather Bulletin', IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued 'Yellow Alert' for Sunday and Monday, followed by 'Orange Alerts' from Tuesday to Thursday. '

As per IMD, heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 48 hours and heavy to very heavy rainfall during subsequent 3 days. Heavy rainfall also very likely at isolated places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during next 3 days.

In the Northwest India, the IMD has predicted light to moderate isolated to scattered rainfall accompanies with thunderstorm, lightning, gusty winds very likely over the Northwest India except Uttar Pradesh during next 5 days.

As per IMD, hailstorm is very likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 3-4 days. Severe thunderstorm with squall very likely over isolated parts of Rajasthan on 15th June, it said.

Furthermore, IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 11-15 June.
