3 min read 12 Jun 2023, 06:20 AM ISTOfficials in Gujarat's Kandla have started shifting people from low-lying areas to temporary shelters as the meteorological office issues a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts. IMD has advised a total suspension of fishing operations until 15 June.

Amid the cyclone alert in the state of Gujarat, officials at the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla at Gujarat's Kutch have started shifting people from low-lying areas to temporary shelters. Officials have been asked to be on alert in case of any emergency situation.
Om Prakash, the Public Relations Officer of Deendayal Port Authority, in Gujarat's Kandla said that six ships have left the port and 11 more will be departing tomorrow.
While speaking to ANI, he said, “Six ships left the port today and 11 more ships will depart tomorrow. Port officials and ship owners have been asked to remain alert. Those staying in low-lying areas of Kandla are being moved to temporary shelters in Gandhidham."

The meteorological office has issued a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts. Some reports have claimed that landfall location could be anywhere between Kutch and Porbandar and it will weaken a bit before landfall on 15 or 16 June.
"Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast: Yellow Message. ESCS BIPARJOY over east-central Arabian Sea, at 1730 IST of 11th June near lat 18.6N & long 67.7E, Likely to cross between Mandvi (Gujarat) & Karachi (Pakistan) by noon of 15th June," IMD said in a tweet on Sunday.
This comes as IMD said that extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' is expected to cross Saurashtra and District Kachchh around noon on June 15.
"Extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' is expected to cross Saurashtra and District Kachchh around noon on June 15. People should stay at safe locations on the day it crosses the Gujarat coast," said IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra while talking to ANI.
He said that when the cyclonic storm reaches near the cost of Kutch the wind speed is expected to reach around 125 to 135 kmph.
"This wind speed is a 'very severe' cyclone wind speed. Therefore the height of the waves generated in the oceans will be around 10-14 in height. Fishermen have been given a warning for the next 5 days," said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
According to the IMD, the storm is likely to move nearly northward till June 14 morning. "It is very likely to move nearly northward till the 14th morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon of 15th June as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph," tweeted IMD in a video.
Speaking of the sea conditions, IMD had said that conditions on June 14 are likely to be phenomenal to very high over the northeast and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea.
"Sea condition is likely to be phenomenal to very high over the northeast and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea and high to very rough sea condition is likely over adjoining areas of a central Arabian Sea," Tweeted the IMD.
"On June 15, Sea condition is likely to be very high to phenomenal over the northeast and very rough to high over adjoining northwest Arabian Sea and very rough to rough sea condition over adjoining areas of central Arabian Sea," it read.
IMD has also advised a total suspension of fishing operations in the region till June 15 and has asked fishermen to not venture into central Arabian sea, north Arabian sea during June 12-15, and along and off Saurashtra-Kutch coasts till June 15.
