Panaji: As the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy over the east-central Arabian Sea moved northwards, the India meteorological department (IMD) has advised fishermen to suspend fishing operations in the east-central, adjoining west-central, and northeast Arabian Sea till June 15.
“Those out at sea are advised to return to the coast,” the IMD warning read.
The Met department has also advised “judicious regulation of offshore and onshore activities” and has asked ports along the west coast of India to take necessary precautions.
“Naval base operations may maintain necessary precautions, and movement in motorboats and small ships off these coasts should be avoided,” the advisory read.
A port warning has also been issued for the Maharashtra-Goa coast.
Between Vengurla and Vasco along the Goa-Maharashtra coast, high waves in the range of 3.5m to 4.1m are forecast till 11.30pm on June 13. The current speeds may vary between 30 and 45 cm per second, the IMD stated.
Squally wind speeds reaching 40-45kmph gusting to 55 kmph are likely along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast on June 13. Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are also very likely at many places on June 13, 14, 15 and 16.
The Met department has advised fishermen not to venture along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast for this period.
The maximum temperature, however, is still 2-3Celcius higher than normal.
On Monday, moderate rain occurred at most places in the state, with Mapusa, Canacona, Pernem, and Panaji receiving 3cm each, Dabolim and Sanquelim receiving 2cm each, and Mormugao, Ponda, Ela (Old Goa), Margao, Quepem, and Sanguem receiving 1cm each.
The Biporjoy cyclonic system, which was over the east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea, moved northward with a speed of 7kmph and lay centred near the Goa coast on Monday.
