Over 2.5B Reddit users flee to protest API changes

Over two and a half billion Reddit users have gone dark on the platform in protest of the recent API changes. The protest, named Reddark, has a livestream that sits at 7,199 subreddits going dark at the time of writing, accounting for a significant portion of the platform. The protest briefly caused Reddit to go offline, though it’s back now.

In total, 7,806 subreddits pledged to take part in the protest, but some have yet to go offline. The group includes some of the largest subreddits on the website, including r/funny (40+ million subscribers), r/gaming (30+ million subscribers), and r/food (20+ million subscribers). The admins of these subreddits, along with thousands of others, have set the subreddits to private so users can’t visit, post, or comment.

The protest takes place over two days, starting on Monday, and is built to push back against Reddit’s recent API changes. After seven years of maintaining a free API, Reddit announced it would move to a paid API model. The cost of this model has caused several third-party Reddit apps to close down, including the popular Apollo app for iPhone and Mac.

Subscribers of these subreddits can still browse the site and visit subreddits that haven’t been set to private. But by cultivating some of the largest communities engaged with the platform, there’s a good chance the majority of users subscribed to these subreddits won’t visit the site at all. According to PCGamer, the subreddits currently joining the protest account for more than two and a half billion users.

Subreddits have been planning Reddark for several weeks, first after Apollo went public with the pricing changes to Reddit’s API. In response, Reddit’s CEO held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) in which he defended the API changes. The company is sticking with its pricing model going forward, he says.

According to Reddit, over 90% of its third-party apps will fall under its free API model. However, the most popular third-party apps that can generate billions of requests within a month would have to pay, which is why Apollo, Sync for Reddit, and Reddit is Fun have all announced they will close on June 30.

This Alienware gaming laptop with an RTX 3080 is $1,750 off today
God of War running on the Alienware x17 R2 laptop.

Alienware is one of the first companies to introduce gaming laptops to the market, and while they face a lot of stiff competition from the likes of Asus, they still make some great laptops. Take, for example, the Alienware X17 R2, a 17-inch laptop with some great specs under the hood, and while it would usually cost $3,350, Dell has discounted it to $1,600. That's a massive $1,750 discount for an amazing laptop that can run many modern AAA games.

Why you should buy the Alienware x17 R2
What makes the Alienware X17 R2 stand out is the blistering 480hz screen refresh rate, which is rare in a gaming laptop and is likely one of only two or three that have it. As for why, the answer is simple: it's made for competitive games like League of Legends or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, where every extra frame counts, and if you're planning to go that route, this is the laptop to do it with. What helps is that the laptop not only has a 1080p screen but it also runs an RTX 3080, one of the most powerful GPUs on the market, so you can really push the frames as far as the screen will take them.

5 things you could buy for the cost of an Apple Vision Pro headset
A man wears Apple Vision Pro.

At $3,500, there's no beating around the bush -- the Apple Vision Pro is expensive. Really, really expensive. And even though we did the math and found it's most likely worth the price, that still doesn't change the fact that you could spend that money on something else.

Sure, those things might not get you the exact same features you would from an Apple Vision Pro. In fact, some of them are quite different. But when you compare them side by side, you might get more enjoyment out of something else than you would from Apple's high-tech headset.
