Cyclone Biparjoy Live Updates: PM Modi holds meet to review situation; Mumbai and Gujarat on high alert

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reviewed the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy which is likely to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Union home minister Amit Shah, principal secretary to Prime Minister P K Mishra, cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, earth sciences secretary M Ravichandran, Kamal Kishore, member national disaster management authority, India, meteorological department director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, among others.According to a presentation made during the meeting, Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh and Morbi could experience stormy weather with a wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 145 kmph on June 15 morning to evening.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has put the authorities concerned on high alert as Cyclone Biparjoy is gaining strength and has now turned into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS), Pakistan-based Geo News reported. It is likely to affect Sindh's coastal regions on June 13.The NDMA in its update on Sunday said that the cyclone might intensify in the next 24 hours and is likely to affect the south and south-eastern regions of Sindh on Tuesday. According to NDMA, the cyclone can cause strong winds, torrential rains and floods in coastal regions of the province, according to Geo News report. (ANI)

Some areas of Ahmedabad are likely to receive rain or thundershowers on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.Several other districts including Gandhinagar, Anand, Kutch and all districts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra are likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers.

Fishing activities along Gujarat's south and north coasts have been suspended and authorities began evacuating people in districts by the sea in view of cyclone Biparjoy likely to make landfall along the Saurashtra-Kutch coasts as a very severe cyclonic storm, officials said on Monday. Officials in coastal Devbhumi Dwarka said around 1,300 people have been shifted to safer places so far in this regard.In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' was very likely to move north-northeast and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by the noon of June 15 as a 'very severe cyclonic storm' with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kilometres per hours (kmph) gusting to 150 kmph.

The severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea on Sunday. In response, the IMD issued an yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane for Monday, indicating gusty winds at isolated places. Over the weekend, strong winds were experienced in parts of the city, with reports of roofs flying off some houses in shanty settlements. IMD officials stated that this was expected due to the storm's impact.

According to the weather department Kutch, Jamnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath, Porbandar, and Devbhumi Dwarka districts are likely to be impacted by the cyclone with heavy rainfall and very high wind speed during June 13-15 which may go up to 150 kmph.
