DIBRUGARH: A six-month pregnant woman died at the
Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) on Thursday, five days after her father-in-law allegedly chopped off her hands in Tinsukia. Sangeeta Kumari died along with her unborn child while undergoing treatment, said sources.
The father-in-law, Harinder Prasad, was arrested in this connection.
On June 4, Sangeeta was brutally attacked with a machete by Harinder at their residence on Manav Kalyan Road in Tinsukia town following a heated debate. Sangeeta and her husband, Rajat Prasad, allegedly refused to allow Harinder to install a CCTV camera inside their home. In a fit of rage, he attacked Sangeeta, said police.
They added that even a day before, the accused had approached the Tinsukia police with a complaint that his son and daughter-in-law were preventing him from installing the CCTV camera.
She was rushed to the Tinsukia civil hospital by Rajat and the neighbours and was later shifted to the AMCH due to her critical condition.
Immediately after the attack, Harinder surrendered himself with the weapon at the Tinsukia police station.
"The accused, who had admitted to the crime, was earlier charged with attempt to murder. Now, he will be charged with murder as the victim has died," Parag Jyoti Buragohain, officer-in-charge of Tinsukia police station said on Saturday.
