NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old woman constable posted in east Delhi was allegedly duped by a man posing as a Ranji cricketer. She came into contact with him through a social media site.
The accused had told her that he needed Rs 10 lakh to get selected for IPL and the constable gave him Rs 8 lakh. Later, when she asked him to repay, he allegedly threatened to leak her private photographs on social media, and also demanded more money. The cop ended up giving him Rs 13.4 lakh.
After she filed a complaint, a case was registered on Friday. Police have come to know that Vicky had duped other people, too, by posing as a cricketer. He is yet to be arrested.
According to the complaint, she met Vicky in December on a social networking site. "He told me that he was from Baghpat and played cricket for the Delhi Ranji team, and soon would play in IPL. He also told me that his mother was a principal at a private school and his father had retired as a lieutenant," the complainant told police.
Later, he called her to meet. The woman gave in after repeated requests and met him at a restaurant in Paschim Vihar. She said Vicky gave her a ring with his name on it and asked her to marry him, but she asked for some time.
They started chatting and speaking on the phone regularly, and also met several times. "Finally, he won my trust. One day he told me that due to money, his selection in IPL was stuck. He asked me to lend him Rs 10 lakh that he will repay after a week," she said. The woman gave her Rs 8.3 lakh by taking a loan.
"I gave him my savings, thinking about his career. However, after one week, when I asked him to pay the money back, he started extending the date," the complainant said. Later, when the constable said she would file a police complaint, the accused told her that he had lost the money in gambling and extorted another Rs 5.1 lakh by threatening to leak her photos.
