Gurgaon: There was no respite from scorching heat and humid conditions on Saturday, with the maximum temperature breaching the 41 degrees Celsius mark. The weatherman had predicted cloudy skies with a possibility of isolated showers, but the day remained clear and sunny.
The maximum temperature was 41.8 degrees Celsius — two notches above normal — up from 40.5 degrees the day before. Last year, the month’s highest maximum temperature was 44.2 degrees Celsius on June 4.
The minimum temperature on Saturday, meanwhile, dipped slightly to 27.1 degrees Celsius, near the normal for this time of the year, from 27.9 degrees on Friday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect weather in the region from June 11, and may cause isolated and light showers in the city on June 12-14. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 41-42 degrees Celsius.
“Easterly winds are bringing moisture from the Arabian Sea. Coupled with high temperatures, this could result in the formation of convective clouds, leading to one or two spells of light showers at isolated places in the city. But there will be no significant change in the maximum temperature in the next few days,” said
Manmohan Singh, director, IMD (Chandigarh). Partly cloudy skies are likely on Sunday with one or two spells of rain. The minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 28 and 41 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The city’s air quality index remained ‘moderate’ on Saturday at 153, compared to 170 the previous day.
Meanwhile, Delhi sizzled on Saturday with the mercury crossing 44 degrees Celsius in several areas. The maximum temperature at the city’s base station, Safdarjung, was 41.8 degrees Celsius.
Sports Complex at Akshardham was the warmest area of the city at 44 degrees Celsius, followed by Pusa (43.7) and Najafgarh (43.5).
