Two people including a nine-year-old girl were killed and eight others were injured in an accident involving four heavy vehicles – two buses, a truck and a container – in the Bhor taluka of Pune district Sunday morning. The accident took place on the Pune-Satara stretch of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway. Two of the eight injured were in critical condition, officials said.
Officials from the Pune rural police said the accident took place around 8 am at Varve Budruk village, located 40 kilometre from Pune city. “Initially, a private bus was hit by a container on the Satara to Pune corridor, when the bus was turning on the service road. After the impact, the bus crossed over to the opposite corridor and hit a truck. Because the truck had come to a sudden halt, a Shivshahi bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation brushed with the truck and landed in a roadside ditch,” said Inspector Sachin Patil, in-charge of the Rajgad police station.
Patil further said, “The driver of the private bus and a nine-year-old girl from the Shivshahi bus have died in the accident. Eight more persons have been injured. Two of the injured are in critical condition.” Details about the identities of the injured and the deceased were awaited.
Officials said the accident led to a major traffic jam on both corridors of the highway. The normal traffic flow resumed after the damaged vehicles were taken off the road using cranes, around three hours after the accident.
