PMC bid to turn organic waste into soil nutrients

PATNA: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started community composting at three garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) in Kankarbagh circle to help residents turn organic waste into nutrients for soil. It is also planning to train the residents, living around 650 GVPs in the city, to compost organic waste in individual capacity, and distribute composters to the houses close to these GVPs.
PMC commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar said three spots had been made under the trees and covered by nets, and were being used for collecting organic waste in Kankarbagh area. "Dry leaves and twigs from the trees fall in this area and people also put their household organic waste there. The area has been covered with a net so that stray animals do not litter the waste," said Parashar, adding that the concept was widely in use in Bangalore and was giving good results.
He said few ward councillors along with PMC officials had recently visited Bangalore to see the process of community composting. "This method of composting will reduce the burden of waste collection as the organic waste will be used locally without any transportation. The manure produced from such community composting spots will also be used in nearby parks," Parasar said.
He further said that apart from community composting, they were also working towards composting to be done in each household in individual capacity, especially those near 650 GVPs.
He also urged people to ensure that the waste was segregated and wet waste was thrown in the green portion and dry in the blue portion of the garbage collecting vehicles.
