CHENNAI: Swetha was looking for a part-time job whose salary would help fund her preparations for competitive exams, while Jeyajothi wanted something in cost auditing or related fields.
At the mega job fair conducted by
Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation at University of Madras University on Saturday, the first a BSc zoology final year student of Bharathi Women's College in George Town was short-listed by a firm and hopes to get 15,000-20,000 a month, while the second a final year B Com student of Sir Theygaraya College was short-listed by a BPO firm. They were among 1,400 shortlisted at the event.
A total of 180 students received offers of jobs from IT firms and BPOs among others. More than 70 companies including Tech Mahindra, Byju's and HDFC took part in the fair. Jeyajothi attended the logistics and internal auditing course, a skill course taught under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme through which he learned auditing.
N Logesh, placement office of Mohamed Sathak College of Arts and Science, said students are better placed to get the jobs following the skills training under Naan Mudhalvan scheme.
V Durga Rajulu, vice-president, industry-academia connect (services), Naan Mudhalvan scheme, said the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation will hold the job fair in all the districts throughout June.
"We are expecting 500 companies to take part in the statewide placement programme. Thousands of students from arts and science colleges are likely to get placed in the drive," he said.
