The weather warnings have been extended into Monday by the Met Office

The Met Office has extended a weather warning for thunderstorms into Monday across large parts of Wales.

It said there was a chance of flooding or lightning strikes with Sunday's alert in place until 21:00 BST.

A new thunderstorm warning covers a large swathe of Wales on Monday between noon and 21:00.

And a warning for heavy rain is in place between 19:00 on Sunday until 09:00 on Monday in a number of areas.

The warning for heavy rain covers a large part of the nation apart from the six council areas in the north.

Up to 60mm (2.4in) of rain could fall in a few hours, the forecaster said.

Prior to the weekend, the last reported rain in Swansea was 8 May, according to BBC weather forecaster Derek Brockway, while in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, rain was last reported on 22 May.

Derek said the weekend storms would be "hit and miss".

"Where they do occur, there is a risk of torrential downpours, hail and gusty winds."

He said there would also be further scattered showers, "heavy and thundery in places" next week, although the dry weather would continue.

Along with sunny spells, the weather would be warm with above average temperatures, he added.
