Suspended state trooper arrested Wednesday for March domestic violence incident

Formerly suspended state trooper Cpl. Anthony DiGati has been charged with five misdemeanors for a domestic violence incident that occurred in March, the Delaware Department of Justice announced Friday.

DiGati was arrested Wednesday after a Delaware State Police investigation.

“Any domestic violence is gravely serious, but it is particularly unsettling to see it committed by someone entrusted to protect the innocent,” said Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “The defendant’s actions endangered his family and dishonored his community."

According to the justice department, police were called to DiGati's home in Townsend on March 14 for a reported domestic violence incident. A woman told officers that she and DiGati had an argument that "became physical," the Department of Justice said, leaving her with bruises on her wrist, ribs and leg. She told police that DiGati also threatened her multiple times.

Police were also informed by the woman of another unreported domestic violence incident in November involving DiGati, in which he reportedly threatened the woman, grabbed her by the hair and slammed her into the floor.

DiGati was suspended while state police and later, the Department of Justice, investigated. He has since been charged with two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of terroristic threatening and one count of offensive touching.

Delaware State Police Superintendent Col. Melissa Zebley said the department "remain(s) dedicated to upholding public trust and fulfilling (their) mission.”

Because DiGati was arrested for an incident that took place while he was not on duty and was in his "personal capacity," the Department of Justice said he will be prosecuted by the general criminal division, rather than the Division of Civil Rights & Public Trust, which investigates police misconduct.
