KALYAN: A man was arrested for allegedly lifting an infant on board a running train on Friday morning. The 1-year-old girl was beside her mother, who was asleep, when the accused, Salim Pathan (45), who lives in Yeola in Nashik, picked her up and ran towards another compartment as the Dadar- Sai Nagar Express was approaching Kalyan station. The child's father had just stepped out to use the washroom at the time, said the railway police.
As the child started bawling, the mother woke up. Not finding the baby beside her, she raised an alarm. Alerted by the baby's cries and the mother's screams for help, passengers accosted the man who was hurriedly moving away. They took the child from him and handed it over to the mother. The passengers asked him where he was taking the child, but he failed to provide any answer.
As the train reached Kalyan station, the passengers handed the man over to the railway police.
Senior inspector Mukesh Dhage of Manpada police station said they are probing if he has been involved in other child-lifting cases.
