NAGPUR: The Nagpur division of Central Railway has successfully installed an error-proof electronic interlocking system (EIS) at 23 stations. The latest to cover the EIS technology is Pandhurna railway station on the Nagpur-Itarsi section.
The EIS is third generation signalling system with the Indian Railways, shifting from the days when it relied on lever frames for their operation to interlock the signals. The lever system was replaced by panel interlocking, and it is being further replaced by fail-safe technology called EIS.
Central Railway CPRO Dr Shivraj Manaspure said, “This electronic interlocking was commissioned with the latest Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) guidelines and with modern technologies like standby fuse alarm, integrated power supply system, and fire alarm system to improve the reliability.”
Electronic interlocking is an arrangement of signal apparatus that prevents conflicting movements between trains through an arrangement of tracks. It is basically a safety measure to prevent signals from being changed in improper sequence.
During the commissioning of electronic interlocking work all indoor and outdoor signalling gears were replaced to improve the signalling performance, which will directly impact positively on the reliability of the system and train running.
“Electronic interlocking is a computer-based signalling system which minimizes human interference and interventions with the signalling system which in turn improves the train safety. New points are also commissioned with thick web switches, which will support the high speed of the train,” said Dr Manapsure.
“It will be ensured that more number of trains can run on the Nagpur-Itarsi section as one additional line is provided in the Pandhurna-Teegaon section with a high level of safety,” the CPRO said.
