CP: Biometrics of 13,000 criminals to be ready soon
Nagpur: City police chief Amitesh Kumar on Thursday said biometric (fingerprint, iris and palm scan) data of around 13,000 accused in different crimes would be digitized in line with the policy of the state government, reports Soumitra Bose.
The work to update the data in the Automated Multimodal Biometric Identification System (AMBIS) is underway on a war footing at different police stations under the supervision of trained staffers.
Maharashtra is said to be the first state to implement the concept of digitization of criminal database last year. “AMBIS will go a long way to improve detection and conviction rate,” said the CP and added, even if a crime is committed in other states, the chances of getting nabbed on the basis of criminal biometric database system would be higher.
AMBIS, which comes with in-built facial recognition facility, can also work as a gadget for collecting fingerprints from the crime scene.
Kumar had assigned DCP, crime, Mummaka Sudarshan as the nodal officer to coordinate the updation. “The system would boost detection, especially in property related offences like burglaries, thefts and so on,” said the CP.
“Matching results of similar biometrics would be targeted rather than having to manually identify from numerous results,” said a senior cop.
