Onam flowers from Kattakada
Thiruvananthapuram: Following the success of last year’s ‘Nammude Onam Nammude Pookalam’ project, IB Satish MLA on Thursday inaugurated the beginning of this year’s edition in Kattakada constituency. As part of it, flower cultivation was commenced at four-and-a-half acres of land in Pallichal panchayat.
Last year, the flowers grown in Kattakkada were in demand across various parts of the district with the farmers benefiting financially well. This time, the aim is to carry out flower cultivation in 25 acres of land in Pallichal alone, whereas the cultivation will also start in other panchayats in the next few weeks.
According to the MLA, the intent is to cultivate flowers in at least 50 acres of land. For this, seeds and saplings will be made available with the help of the department of agriculture and various voluntary organisations.
Additionally, 50,000 saplings will be made available through the PMKSY scheme under the block panchayat, he said. The project is being implemented with the help of MGNREGA employees, the department of agriculture, Nemom block panchayat and Kudumbashree members. TNN
