JAMSHEDPUR: A 23-year-old pregnant woman died of Covid-19 infection after delivering her baby at the government-run
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Wednesday evening. The health of the newborn is fine, doctors attending to the baby said.
A resident of Ichagarh block in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan district, the victim was admitted to the hospital with labour pain on June 1.
She gave birth to a baby on June 5 after which she fell ill. In the diagnosis, the doctors found her to be infected by Covid-19. Subsequently, she was shifted to the
Covid ward and her treatment was going on but she succumbed to the infection on Wednesday.
Newborn is healthy, say docs Hospital superintendent Dr Ravindra Kumar said, "The mother was diagnosed as Covid positive but the health of the newborn is fine."
East Singhbhum civil surgeon Jujhar Majhi said the Covid pandemic is yet to go.
He also added that citizens need to follow the guidelines to avert the risk of contracting the virus.
Earlier on April 16, the district reported the last Covid death, currently, there are two Covid-infected persons under treatment, according to the Covid data of the district.
With 70,778 recoveries and 1,144 deaths, the district has reported a total of 71,924 Covid cases between May 12, 2020 and June 7, 2023.
