NOIDA: A 30-year-old man has been arrested after his wife was found dead at their residence in Noida on Wednesday. The woman's family alleged that they were being forced to pay a dowry to the accused and his family. Five co-accused named in the case are absconding. An FIR under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, has been registered under Phase 3 police station.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Parvez, a resident of Garhi Chaukhandi in Noida.
"On June 6 we were informed that woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan. A team reached the spot and took the body into possession. We have sent it for postmortem," said a senior officer at the Phase 3 police station.
No suicide note was recovered from the spot but most of the family members were found to be absconding, police said.
"Investigation revealed that the woman who was residing in Bulandshahr got married three years back and the couple has a child. The woman's family was informed about the incident on Wednesday," the officer said.
Six people including the husband were booked under sections 304(b) (whoever commits dowry death shall be punished), and 498A (cruelty against women) of the IPC along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
"Parvez was arrested on Thursday from Ajnara Homes's park, while his three sisters, a brother, and mother are absconding. Teams are working to nab them," the officer said.
About 20 dowry deaths were reported every day in the country between 2017 and 2021, with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest at six deaths daily.
According to data shared by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra in Rajya Sabha last December, 35,493 dowry deaths were reported in the country between 2017 and 2021. In 2017, 7,466 dowry deaths were reported, 7,167 in 2018, 7,141 in 2019, 6,966 in 2020, and 6,753 in 2021, he had said. The highest number of 11,874 dowry deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh in those five years.
