Customs and Border Protection agents in Calexico, California, recently intercepted over a ton of methamphetamine valued at more than $4.3 million.
The tractor-trailer carrying the illicit narcotics was manifested for a shipment of Brussels sprouts. The truck and its 51-year-old driver were referred for further inspection, where CBP dogs indicated there were drugs hidden in the shipment, according to CBP.
“Smugglers are constantly utilizing innovative methods to conceal narcotics [but] officers were able to make a notable discovery within a shipment of produce,” CBP Calexico Area Port Director Roque Caza said in a statement.
The agents found a total of 148 packages concealed within the roof and the floor of the trailer. The packages contained 2,052 pounds of meth.
The driver, whose name and nationality were not disclosed, was taken into custody by Homeland Security investigators. The truck and drugs were seized by CBP.
