GUWAHATI: The monsoon is set to hit the northeast on Saturday, the IMD said, offering hope of respite from a savage summer to the region and other parts eyeing similar relief from the mercury misery. With the Southwest Monsoon gliding into
Kerala on Thursday, the IMD’s NE Regional Meteorological Centre said conditions were favourable for its further advance in the region over the next 48 hours.
While the Kerala onset was a week behind its June 1 schedule, the rains are likely to arrive on time in the northeast, following a five-year trend. Since 2018, monsoon has been hitting NE between June 1 and 10. It usually arrives on June 5.
According to the extended range forecast of IMD, light to moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall and thunderstorms are likely over the northeast in the next two weeks — June 9 to June 15 and June 16 to June 22.
“Overall, rainfall activity is likely to be normal to above normal over most parts of the region during these two weeks,” a Met official said.
