Pune: Staggered water supply for Kharadi area from tomorrow

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation has revised the water supply schedule for parts of Kharadi - including Chandannagar, Boratewasti, MHADA colony, Chavannagar, Sai Park area - starting from Saturday.
The move comes after complaints that the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) once-a-week water closure on every Thursday for the last few weeks was disrupting the supply to the entire area over the next almost two to three days.
Former corporators Mahendra Pathare and Bhaiyasaheb Jadhab told TOI that the restoration of water in most areas in Kharadi after Thursday's day-long closure was taking more than three days. They said it was thus leading to a lot of hardships for residents - a situation worsened due to the immense heat. The corporators approached the administration recently to work out a different plan to improve the supply and save water at the same time as the civic body intends to.
Accordingly, the water supply department on Thursday announced staggered water closure in parts of Kharadi. The PMC has declared different time slots and days for closures over various parts of the area. Though effectively, this may result in alternate-day water supply to a housing society/establishment in an area, the supply will be adequate and with required pressure, the water department officials said.
"We will check if this revised system helps redress the issue. If this fails as well, will shall approach the civic officials again," Jadhav said.
Pathare, who is the former elected representative from Kharadi, said, "The population of the area is over one lakh. Residents will now receive alternate-day water supply, but we hope it will be with adequate pressure now."
Once-a-week water closure on every Thursday has been introduced in the city since the last month in the backdrop of the probability of a weak monsoon during the initial stages.
