MANGALURU: Shops and establishments in the Vamanjoor area on the outskirts of the city shut their establishments for half a day on Thursday, in support of residents, who were protesting against a mushroom factory in a residential area, creating health hazards to the surrounding population.
Residents sat on an indefinite dharna demanding the closure of the mushroom factory with local villager Riyaz Ahmed, leading the protest.
He alleged that the factory operating amidst a residential area having about 190 houses, is creating a lot of health problems allegedly due to the chemicals being sprayed inside the factory that contain the foul smell while harvesting and processing mushrooms.
Ahmed said the protest will go on till the deputy commissioner and company authorities assure that the problem will be solved in a month and the factory would remain shut till such time.
