KOPPAL: Earthen and plastic bowls are hung on trees in the district administration office premises here. Those bowls full of water in the morning are empty in the afternoon, due to the scorching sun. Thanks to Sultan Sab, a driver in the health department, hundreds of birds drink water from these bowls throughout the day.
Wildlife lover Sultan Sab aka Sultan Mohammed regularly fills bowls with water, buys replacements whenever they break and refills them. Sultan works as a car driver for the district health and family welfare department. As soon as he reaches the office in the morning, he fills the bowls with water and gets about his work.
After finishing work in the evening, he refills the bowls with water before returning home, says Amin Attar, CEO of zilla panchayat, Koppal. With this service, Sultan has become a driver not only for the car but also for the birds' lives. He bought more than 200 bowls with his own money and hung them on trees in the district administration office. There are no water sources around this office. Due to Sultan's providing water , thousands of birds live comfortably on hot summer days, says Amin Attar.
"Birds used to come near the district administration office water tanker. After seeing them struggle for water during summer days, I decided to provide them with water. Since birds are tree-based creatures, I tied water bowls to tree branches and put water and foxtail millet in a bowl. Helping birds in this way is a pleasure," says Sultan. Sultan does not take anyone's help for his service. This driver, who does not want publicity, is a symbol of life-loving driving force.
