PUNE: The rural police on Tuesday arrested a six-member gang, including two women, whose modus operandi was to honey-trap men into marriage and then flee with their gold ornaments and valuables.
The gang, hailing from Nashik, has cheated 20 men in Junnar taluka alone. The police also suspect their involvement in more cases in Nashik and other locations.
The arrests were made after recent incidents, in which the gang duped two men in Junnar taluka. It came to light when a 33-year-old vegetable trader from Narayangaon filed a complaint against three persons. He said a woman took Rs1.30 lakh from him "to treat her ailing mother". Within a week of their wedding, she fled from his house with gold ornaments. Then, the complainant found out that the same woman had married another man from Junnar taluka and fled with his Rs1.60 lakh and gold ornaments, also within a week.
The woman turned out to be one of the arrested suspects, aged 35, said sub-inspector Vinod Dhurve of the Narayangaon police. He added that that those arrested include a 39-year-old woman from Ghoti in Nashik, the kingpin of the racket. The others are an agent from Ghoti, two from Ahmednagar district and one from Junnar taluka.
"The gang may have duped several men . Most have not come forward. We appeal to anyone else duped by them to approach us and file a complaint," he said.
