Lung lavage performed on 42-yr-old man
Mysuru: Lung lavage was performed at Manipal Hospital on a 42-year-old male patient who had reported to the department of pulmonology with a complaint of breathlessness. During the procedure, the doctors successfully removed 9 litres of accumulated proteinaceous fluid from the patient’s lungs. The patient had started developing breathlessness and fatigue for the past few months. According to pulmonologist Dr Lakshmi Narasimhan, PAP is a rare lung condition typically caused by accumulation of pulmonary surfactant within the lung. The standard treatment for PAP is GM-CSF injection. However, currently, in India GM-CSF injection is unavailable and hence the team had to consider lung lavage to remove the accumulated pulmonary surfactant from the
patient’s lungs, he said.
