Newborn dies after car hits horse-drawn buggy in Missouri, parents also injured

An infant is dead after a car hit a horse-drawn buggy from behind in South Central Missouri, law enforcement confirmed Thursday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the crash took place early Tuesday evening on Highway C, two miles north of Seymour, a small city about 35 miles east of downtown Springfield.

According to Sgt. Michael McClure, the wreck happened when a southbound vehicle attempted to pass a horse-drawn buggy occupied by a newborn baby boy and his 23-year-old mother and 24-year-old father, going the same direction.  

The passing vehicle collided into the rear of the buggy ejecting the family inside, McClure told USA TODAY.

The baby, less than one month old, was transported to nearby hospital, McClure said, where he died due to injuries. His parents suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car that struck the buggy was not hurt and had no indications of impairment, McClure said.

The crash investigation is being handled by the highway patrol's Troop D region.
