LUNCH ON DAY 2: Mohammed Shami bowls out the final over of the session, with India skipper Rohit Sharma bringing him back in place of Shardul Thakur hoping to grab another wicket before the umpire flicks the bails to signal the end of the session. Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey is off to a promising start and his contribution will be key to Australia's hopes of going past the 500-mark on the other side of the interval.
India will head back to the dressing room a happy bunch, having finally topped a session after getting thoroughly bossed by Australia on the opening day.

Mohammed Siraj returns to the attack in the 104th over, replacing Umesh Yadav. Starc and Carey collect a single each in the first two deliveries, and the former is run out at the non-striker's end three balls later while attempting a risky single as Axar Patel catches him short with a superb direct hit. Shardul Thakur continues to operate from the other end and surprises Australia skipper Cummins with a snorter, the latter edging towards the vacant gully region whiile attempting to fend it. Four leg byes added to the Aussie total in the last delivery of the 105th with the ball beating keeper Bharat to his right after taking a deflection off Cummins' front pad.

Thakur concedes three singles in his second over of the day after starting with a wicket maiden. Umesh, meanwhile, bowls a steep bouncer to Carey in the following over, which goes over the leaping keeper for four byes. Australia two short of the 400-mark at the end of the 102nd with four wickets in hand.

Impressive fightback from the Indians after the fiery start to the day by overnight batters Travis Head and Steve Smith, with Siraj, Shami and Thakur grabbing a wicket each, with Shami and Thakur bowling wicket maidens. Two new batters at the crease at the moment, with the responsibility of getting Australia as close to 500 as possible now falling on Carey's shoulders.

BOWLED! And now 'Lord' Shardul Thakur strikes off his first ball of the second day, getting the prized wicket of Steve Smith! Yet again we witness a wicket fall right after the drinks interval. Smith looks to push a length ball outside off, but ends up getting a thick inside edge onto the stumps, bringing the curtains down on another stellar knock from one of the finest batters of the current generation. New batter Carey gets off the mark with a boundary off Shami in the second delivery of the 97th guiding it behind point. Shami later appeals for LBW against the southpaw in consecutive deliveries, with umpire Chris Gaffaney shaking his head on both occasions and Indian wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat voting against going for the review on both occasions. The two wickets certainly appears to have pumped the Indians up with the fielding side suddenly getting a lot chattier and a lot sharper on the field. Drinks called on the field at the end of this over. End of a mixed first hour, in which India managed to claw back with two wickets.
