The murder of notorious Uttar Pradesh gangster Sanjeev Jeeva inside the Lucknow Civil Court premises has sent shockwaves across the state, particularly as the incident mirrors the recent killing of another infamous gangster, Atiq Ahmad. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the circumstances surrounding Jeeva’s assassination.
Sanjeev Jeeva, infamous for his criminal activities across Muzaffarnagar, UP, was standing trial for the murder of BJP leader Brahma Datt Dwivedi. His life abruptly ended when an assailant, disguised as a lawyer, opened fire inside the court premises. The attack resulted in the injury of three bystanders, including a child, who are now receiving medical treatment.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office announced on Wednesday that a three-member SIT, including Mohit Agarwal (ADG Technical), Nilabja Chaudhary (Joint CP, Lucknow), and Praveen Kumar (Ayodhya IG), has been assembled to investigate the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lucknow, Rahul Raj confirmed that Jeeva succumbed to his injuries and added, “Two of our constables also sustained injuries but are out of danger. They are currently under treatment. The assailant has been arrested.”
Lucknow District Magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar stated that the injured child’s condition was stable and she was receiving treatment. Meanwhile, lawyers held a protest outside the Lucknow Civil Court following the shooting incident.
Jeeva’s criminal activities, which include kidnapping, extortion, and high-profile murders, made headlines throughout his criminal career. His assassination has drawn parallels to the recent killing of Atiq Ahmad, a fellow UP gangster. Both men, once untouchable figures due to their criminal influence, were shockingly targeted within the confines of judicial or penal institutions.
Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party President, Akhilesh Yadav, voiced serious concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state following these incidents. He implied a lack of coordination between the state and central government as a potential contributing factor to the current state of lawlessness.
The recent assassinations of both Jeeva and Ahmad underscore the urgent need for a security protocol review within Uttar Pradesh’s judicial and penal systems. As the situation continues to evolve, authorities are being challenged to regain control and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
