The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Tuesday urged parents and caregivers to stop using Boppy Newborn Loungers, a pillow for newborns, after two babies died following the agency’s massive recall in 2021.
The recalled products by The Poppy Company of Golden, Colorado, include Poppy Original Newborn Loungers, Poppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Poppy Born Kids Poppy Newborn Loungers.
More than 3 million newborn lounges Recalled in September 2021 After eight children died as a result of the use of the product. The deaths occurred between December 2015 and June 2020.
CBSC warned at the time that there is a risk of suffocation if children are rolled, moved, or placed in the lounger in a suffocation position, or if children roll the lounger over an outside surface such as an adult’s pillow. .
Following the recall, another child in October 2021 suffocated and was placed on the couch to sleep and then curled up under a nearby adult’s pillow. Another baby, placed in a newborn lounger in an adult bed with parents and soft bedding, was found dead in the lounge in November of the same year. The cause of death has not been determined, the agency said.
The CPSC said the newborn loungers are no longer legal for sale since they were recalled. However, the agency and Poppy have sent multiple requests to Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to remove the recalled products that continue to be sold on their sites.
Listing the recalled products for sale on an online marketplace or selling or donating the recalled product in any other way is illegal, the company said. Consumers should stop using the recalled newborn loungers and contact The Poppy Company for instructions on how to dispose of the product and receive a refund.
The agency recommended that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard. It said parents and caregivers should not place blankets, pillows, padded crib bumpers or other items near a sleeping baby and should always place babies on their backs.
