COIMBATORE: A day after her lover was murdered by her uncle, an 18-year-old girl attempted suicide at Mayiladumparai near Chettipalayam on Tuesday afternoon. She was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). On Sunday night, the girl’s lover, a 21-year-old youth, was murdered by her relative when he visited her house around midnight to greet her on her birthday.
The girl, who was under severe depression, consumed yellow cow dung powder (a chemical dye) at her residence on Tuesday afternoon. She was rushed to the CMCH for treatment. Police said the girl’s condition is stable.
Around 12.15am on Monday, the girl’s lover V Prasanth, 21 of Gandhi Nagar at Sundarapuram, had gone to her residence at Vasantham Nagar to greet her on her birthday. He was under the influence of alcohol when he knocked on the door of her house. The girl’s uncle Vignesh, 29, a taxi driver, who opened the door assaulted Prasanth with a sickle. Three of Prasanth’s friends rushed him to a hospital on a scooter but the vehicle ran out of petrol. When they finally managed to take him to the CMCH, he was declared dead. Police arrested Vignesh for the murder.
