Cyclone Biparjoy Live Updates: Biparjoy may produce thunderstorms in Gujarat from Friday

As Cyclone Biparjoy, which is developing into a “very severe cyclone” in the Arabian Sea, is moving northwards, the India meteorological department (IMD) bulletin states that Gujarat may experience its effects from Friday onwards, in the form of strong winds and thunderstorms.According to the IMD’s evening bulletin, Biparjoy, located about 860km southwest of Goa, is likely to intensify as it moves northwards. The cyclone is not likely to make landfall in India and is likely to move towards the Arabian Peninsula, according to the bulletin.

It will delay the monsoon onset over Kerala further, which may arrive at Kerala in a couple of days once all the three criteria for its onset are met,” said meteorologist and retired NIO scientist, MR Ramesh Kumar.The three criteria are that 60% of the 14 stations get 2. 5mm rainfall on two consecutive days, the winds from the surface up to 4. 5km in the atmosphere are westerlies with a wind speed of 6m per sec, and the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is less than 200 watts per sqm.

Conditions are becoming favourable for Monsoon onset over Kerala (MOK) during the next 48 hours, said IMD. It added that according to the latest meteorological features associated with monsoon onset over Kerala, there is a persistence of westerly winds over the south Arabian Sea and an increase of cloudiness over areas covering the southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep and Kerala coasts.With an increase in the depth of westerly winds up to middle tropospheric levels, the conditions are also favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of the south Arabian Sea and the entire Lakshadweep area and more parts of the Bay of Bengal.

The severe cyclonic storm 'Biparjoy' over the east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea intensified on Wednesday to become a very severe cyclonic storm, IMD officials said.The storm was centred approximately 860km west-southwest of Goa, 940km southwest of Mumbai, 1,000km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1,300km south of Karachi at 5.30pm on Wednesday.

In view of the likelihood of the weather system over the Arabian sea turning into a deep depression or a cyclone, the BMC has braced itself for its probable effects.

To move nearly northwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. ” The Met department, in its fiveday forecast, said light to moderate rain was “very likely” from June 7-10 in parts of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.

Due to the low-pressure area that has formed over South East Arabian Sea due to the cyclone Biparjoy, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned fishermen on Karnataka's coast not to venture into seas due to dangerous weather conditions and rough sea conditions prevailing over South East Arabian Sea till further notice.

With the cyclone Biparjoy expected to form and move northwards along the west coast, IMD has issued warning for rough seas and gale winds along the coast. Fishermen have been asked not to venture out into sea and those out have been asked to return to the nearest coast. Yellow alerts and warnings for heavy rainfall of 7 to 11cm have been issued till Saturday. Officials said that this could intensify the southwest monsoon winds in the region. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off Kerala coast.

Biparjoy is the first cyclone to form in June in the Arabian Sea after 2020. Since 1982, ten cyclones had formed in June in the Arabian Sea, as per IMD data. But there is absolutely no cyclone threat to the Indian coast. Both IMD and the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre forecasts clearly indicate that the cyclone will remain away from India, with no impact on the west coast: Vineet Kumar Singh, researcher at Jeju National University, South Korea

An exceptionally warm Arabian Sea, a weak monsoon onset and favourable Madden Julian Oscillation conditions were favouring the cyclone. The Madden-Julian Oscillation is the major fluctuation in tropical weather on weekly to monthly timescales, said Roxy Mathew Koll, senior climate expert from Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune.

A depression that has formed over the southeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea and the adjoining southeast during the next 12 hours. The India meteorological department (IMD) has warned of squally weather owing to this phenomenon, and warned fishermen against venturing into the sea over the next couple of days.

Meteorologists say the tentative track of the system will be in the northward direction but storms at times defy the predicted track and intensity. Forecasting agencies said the storm has been undergoing 'rapid intensification'.

IMD has issued a warning for squally winds gusting up to 60kmph along and off the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts during June 8-10.

Unlike other Arabian Sea storms such as super cyclone Nisarga in 2020 or extremely severe cyclone Tauktae in 2021, Biparjoy unlikely to cause widespread damage to the Indian coast, top climate experts said.
