CM Banerjee visits an accident victim in Odisha on Tuesday
BHUBANESWAR/CUTTACK: Thirty-one people from Bengal who were travelling in the ill-fated trains in Bahanaga on June 2 are still missing, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday, adding that the bodies of 103 people from the state had been identified.
"There were so many people from Bengal travelling in those trains," Banerjee said after landing in Odisha on Tuesday. "So far, 103 bodies have been identified, of which 83 have been handed over. As many as 31 are still missing," she added.
Banerjee's statement coincided with the authorities once again revising the death toll to 288, two days after lowering it to 275. "This is no time for arguments. Let the truth come out," Banerjee said, two days since accusing the Centre of "trying to reduce the number of deaths". tnn & agencies
Important for truth to come out: CM
About the CBI probe, CM Mamata Banerjee said: "I don't want to say anything. The truth must come out. Let the truth prevail; it must not be suppressed."
Banerjee arrived in Odisha on Tuesday afternoon and was received by Odisha minister Tusharkanti Behera. She left for Cuttack and met the injured at SCB hospital.
"The truth must come out. It must not be suppressed, as so many lives have been lost," she said. "Odisha and Bengal governments are working together, providing free treatment. More than 200 people are in hospitals. Of them, about 93 are in Odisha hospitals."
Banerjee also visited the eye and surgery department at SCB hospital. She said there were 57 injured from Bengal there. "Some have lost their limbs, some their eyes," she told reporters. "I want to be with the people. Many lives have been lost and it is important for the truth to come out," she said, demanding a probe.
Banerjee was accompanied by ministers Shashi Panja and Chandrima Bhattacharjee. Both ministers visited injured passengers at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Returning to Bengal, Banerjee visited Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. "In Midnapore, 61 patients are still admitted," she said. "Around 16 patients from Bihar are admitted here. I am thankful to the people of Midnapore. Doctors, nurses and officials here were proactive in dealing with the incident."
