After clash, GIMS to shift hostel out of GBU campus
Noida: The guard who shot in the air on the Gautam Buddha University campus after clashes broke out with students of Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) on Sunday has been identified, and will be arrested soon, police said.
Students had said they heard the sound of a gunshot during the clashes. Police confirmed the same on Tuesday.
Around 10.30pm on Sunday, a spat allegedly over smoking at the GIMS hostel in the GBU compound turned into a fight.
Videos of the standoff purportedly showed dozens of guards smashing the windows of cars and vehicles with sticks.
The GIMS administration told TOI that two of the 22 MBBS students injured in the clashes were in the intensive care unit of the hospital – one of them with a spinal injury, and the other with a head injury.
“Both of them are second-year students. Their condition is stable,” said GIMS director Brigadier Rakesh Gupta (retd). None of the injured students have bullet wounds.
On Tuesday, GBU directed the security agency, which had deployed the guards, not to allow the 11 guards who were arrested after the Sunday night clashes into the university.
“Based on the names that have been listed as suspects and the video footage, we have ordered the agency to suspend the 11 security guards who were allegedly involved in the clash with the students,” said Vishwas Tripathi, GBU registrar.
A three-member committee in GBU is also investigating the incident. “The guards will be suspended until the investigation is over. Once the report is submitted to the vice-chancellor, we will decide if they can be deployed here. If found guilty, we will take action against them,” said Tripathi.
Police said the four MBBS students who were taken into custody on Monday have been released.
“Action against the four students was taken under Section 151 (arrest to prevent cognisable offence without magisterial order) of the CrPC. They were released on Monday night. The security guard who fired a shot on the campus has been identified and he will be arrested soon,” said Sarita Malik, SHO at the Ecotech-1 police station.
Heeding to the demands of the medical students who had protested against the clashes, the GIMS director said the institute has agreed to shift the hostel from the GBU campus.
“We have agreed to provide a separate hostel for GIMS students. We are looking for viable options for accommodation as soon as possible,” Gupta said.
GIMS students have been living at the Munshi Premchand Hostel on the GBU campus since 2015 as the medical institute, some 300 metres from the university, does not have adequate space for a residential facility on its premises.
For now, a few students have returned to the hostel at GBU, and many have gone to their hometowns. “We have increased security in the hostel. Initially, there was one guard. Now, we have assigned three more guards and if needed, we will also assign a bouncer,” the GIMS director said.
