LUCKNOW: Panic struck passengers of Ganga-Sutlej Express going from Dhanbad to Firozpur via Lucknow after one of its compartments caught fire on Tuesday. It created a stampede-like situation as many passengers tried to escape.
Chief fire officer, Lucknow, Mangesh Kumar said that around 4.55pm a distress call was received about fire in a train.
Following this, fire station officer Shivdaras Prasad and his team immediately rushed to the spot and doused the flames. "The firemen reached the spot within a few minutes. It was observed that the fire was started in coach number-4. Three fire extinguishers were used to douse the fire," said Kumar.
FSO Prasad said that after the fire got completely extinguished, the passengers who got down due to fear were persuaded and assured about their safety and made to sit again on the train.
Prasad said that the name of the driver of the train was Subodh Kumar, while the assistant driver were identified as Omkar Nath Paswan.
Train guard RK Rawat, who later inspected the train, found that there was no longer any danger of fire following which the train began its onward journey.
