West Ham face Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final tonight

David Moyes' side ended a 47-year wait for a European final after beating Dutch side AZ Alkmaar 3-1 on aggregate.

West Ham fell agonisingly short last season in the final four of the Europa League but now will hope they can avenge that hurt in UEFA's third tier.

Holders Roma won the inaugural Europa Conference League last term and built on its automatic path into UEFA's secondary competition to reach the final of that this campaign, proving how much of a boost lifting this trophy can give to a team.

But Italian outfit Fiorentina will represent a stern test, having also not won a major European title since the 1960's.

West Ham vs Fiorentina: What has been said?

West Ham boss Moyes said: "I do believe the players have got a great opportunity to be remembered by everybody at this club.

"There are a new generation of West Ham supporters now in east London and the London Stadium is filled every week, which shows you just how well-considered West Ham is in this part of London.

"We've got a really good group of players, who are hungry to succeed. I hope we can show that on Wednesday night."

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen added: “I think achieving this with your teammates who you’ve been with together to get to a final and you have the opportunity to win a trophy together, it will be a massive moment.

“Of course we’re all excited about being in the final of a European competition and this will be the pinnacle for a lot of players. It will certainly be the biggest game of my career.

“We all want it, but it’s important to not get too hyped up for it. We need to find that balance of not going over the top but also not caring enough.

“The main priority is to win the game. As players we want to be part of that moment but for the fans it would mean so much. I want to be part of the squad that gives the fans that moment and that’s what we’re all striving to do.”

West Ham vs Fiorentina: Match facts

  • This will be the first ever meeting between Fiorentina and West Ham United in a European competition.
  • West Ham have lost each of their previous two meetings with Italian sides in Europe, losing twice against Palermo in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup First Round (0-1 and 0-3).
  • Fiorentina have lost just three of their previous 12 games against English sides in European competitions (W6 D3). However, they were eliminated by Tottenham in the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League Last 32, which was when they last faced an English opponent.
  • West Ham United will contest a major European final for the third time in their history, after the 1965 Cup Winners’ Cup (won v 1860 München) and the 1976 Cup Winners’ Cup (lost v Anderlecht).
  • Fiorentina have reached the final of a major European competition for the fifth time in their history and for the first time since the 1989-90 UEFA Cup (lost v Juventus). Fiorentina have won just one of their previous four European finals, beating another British side, Rangers, in the 1961 Cup Winners’ Cup final.
  • Fiorentina’s Cristiano Biraghi has provided six assists in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season, the joint-most of any player in European competitions this term, alongside Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne. Biraghi is the first ever defender on record to provide six assists in a single European season (since 2006-07).
  • West Ham United have forced the most high turnovers (121) and attempted the most shots following high turnovers (26) of any team in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. They are also the team with the most goals scored from fast breaks in the competition this term (3).

  • Fiorentina have scored 36 goals in 14 games in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season (2.6 per game), at least five more than any other side in European competitions this season (Man City are second with 31 goals in 12 games in the UCL). Moreover, Fiorentina have attempted the most shots (261) and registered the most shots on target (94) of any team in European competitions this term.
  • The final of a major European competition is being hosted in Czech Republic for the very first time - Chelsea and Bayern München contested the European Supercup at Eden Aréna (now known as Fortuna Arena) in 2013, when the German side won in a penalty shootout.
  • This will be the ninth instance of an Italian side facing an English side in the final of a major European competition, with each country’s clubs being crowned champions on four of the previous eight occasions.
